The recent shelling of Belgorod by Ukraine has resulted in a devastating loss of life, with at least 24 people confirmed dead and 108 others injured. Among the casualties were several children, further intensifying the tragedy.
Russian Representative's Remarks at the UN Security Council Meeting
During a UN Security Council meeting, Vassily Nebenzia, Moscow’s permanent representative to the UN, condemned the attack, asserting that Ukraine's actions demonstrate a deliberate effort to harm Russian civilians. Nebenzia highlighted the strike on Belgorod's center, emphasizing the presence of children at the targeted locations, including a skating rink and a sports facility.
Rejection of Western Narrative and Accusations Against Kiev
Nebenzia vehemently rejected the Western narrative that insinuated Moscow's military operation triggered the tragic events. He emphasized that the military operation was launched to halt the relentless bombardment of cities and towns in Donbass by the Kiev regime. The Russian envoy accused Kiev of seeking to inflict harm on Russian citizens, aligning this agenda with the interests of Western powers.
Allegations Against Kiev's Advisors and International Responsibility
Furthermore, Nebenzia implicated British and American advisers in influencing the Ukrainian authorities to commit violent acts, asserting their direct involvement in the 'terrorist attack' on Belgorod. He also held EU countries accountable for their role in the situation. Nebenzia stressed the urgency of defeating the alleged terrorist regime in Kiev to prevent further tragedies.
International Response and Comments by Former Russian President
The shelling of Belgorod has prompted international concern, with the UN Secretary-General's office labeling it a violation of international humanitarian law. However, the blame for the attack was not explicitly assigned. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev suggested that the shelling may have been a result of Ukraine's inability to alter the situation on the front line, following the capture of the Donbass stronghold of Maryinka by Russian troops.
