The San Francisco 49ers have been installed as slight favorites over the Kansas City Chiefs for Super Bowl LVIII. However, the point spread quickly dropped at sportsbooks across the country.

Line Movement

The 49ers initially opened as 2.5-point favorites at ESPN BET, but within 20 minutes, the line dipped to -1.5 and even as low as -1 at some sportsbooks Sunday night.

Chiefs Underdogs Again

If the line holds, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will find themselves as underdogs for the third consecutive game. Kansas City has a 9-3 record as outright underdogs in Mahomes' starts.

Playoff Odds

The Chiefs entered the playoffs at 10-1 to win the Super Bowl, their longest odds of the season. However, Mahomes led another impressive postseason run, securing victories over the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens to earn a spot in the Super Bowl for the fourth time in the last five seasons.

Niners' Journey

Despite being the top seed in the NFC, the 49ers had to endure challenging playoff matchups against the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions to reach the Super Bowl.

Exciting Comeback

In a thrilling match against the Lions, the 49ers fought back from a 24-7 deficit in the first half to secure a 34-31 victory. This comeback proved costly for the betting public, as the underdog Lions were a popular bet at BetMGM sportsbooks.

Betting Predictions

Before the conference championship games, Caesars Sportsbook had the 49ers as 3-point favorites over the Chiefs in a potential Super Bowl matchup. Adam Pullen, assistant director of trading for Caesars Sportsbook, expressed his surprise at the possibility of the Chiefs becoming favorites in the Super Bowl.

Betting Odds

San Francisco opened at -130 on the money line, and the over/under total was set at 47.5 at ESPN BET. Interestingly, historically, the betting favorite has won 36 of 57 Super Bowls, with underdogs maintaining a close 28-27-2 record against the spread.
