The Newport Beach police department has announced that they will not be pursuing charges against Josh Giddey, a guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder, after concluding an investigation into allegations of an improper relationship with an underage girl. The department released a statement on Wednesday night, stating that after a thorough examination, they were unable to corroborate any criminal activity related to Mr. Giddey.
Allegations and Investigation
The allegations against Giddey initially surfaced on social media in late November, when an anonymous user claimed that a girl seen with Giddey in videos and photographs was a high school junior at the time. The Newport Beach police opened an investigation soon after the allegations emerged, actively seeking additional information and pursuing all leads and evidence to obtain the facts of the case. The NBA also became involved in the matter, with spokesperson Michael Bass stating that the league is aware of the findings in the police inquiry and is continuing their review.
NBA's Response
NBA commissioner Adam Silver indicated in early December that the league office's investigation would 'take a back seat' to the Newport Beach police's process. He emphasized the league's stance of working with law enforcement and gathering available information, while also falling in behind any ongoing investigation. The league is awaiting further details before proceeding with their review of the matter.
Giddey's Reaction
Throughout the process, Josh Giddey, 21, has chosen not to comment about the allegations. Oklahoma City Thunder coach Mark Daigneault referred to the allegations as a 'personal matter' in late November and mentioned that the organization made the decision for Giddey to continue playing based on the facts available to them. Giddey, despite facing boos in road games since the allegations emerged, has maintained his focus on the game, averaging 11.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game for the Thunder.
