Miami head coach Gerardo 'Tata' Martino initially indicated that it was likely Messi would play in the Hong Kong friendly, only to later declare Messi unfit for the match. China's state-controlled Global Times raised questions about the differential treatment for Hong Kong in comparison to other locations where Messi participated in pre-season friendly matches. Regina Ip, a senior advisor to the Hong Kong government, expressed strong sentiments, stating that the deliberate absence of Messi in Hong Kong had deeply angered the local population. Inter Miami CF is scheduled to conclude its seven-game preseason tour with a match against Messi's youth club, Newell's Old Boys, before commencing MLS regular-season play at home against Real Salt Lake.
